World Energy Efficiency Day, the key to sustainability

World Energy Efficiency Day is celebrated every 5 March. The initiative, which originated in Austria during the First International Conference on Energy Efficiency, aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce energy consumption and to raise awareness of the importance of rational energy use.

It is clear that the planet is suffering the consequences of an unsustainable production and consumption model and that we can see the effects of climate change with our own eyes. In recent years, many countries - mainly in Europe - have been developing strategic frameworks to address this environmental crisis, opening up an era of transformation and ecological transition of the economy and industry.

What is energy efficiency?

Energy efficiency, sometimes simply called energy efficiency or energy savings, is the goal of reducing the amount of energy required to provide products, both used in industrial processes and consumed by citizens in their homes and in carrying out their daily activities.

Being energy efficient does not mean lowering the level of comfort to which we are accustomed or our quality of life, but learning to do so without harming the environment. This is one of the policies that have been instituted to curb climate change and achieve a more sustainable society, powered by renewable energies that are as environmentally friendly as possible. And while electricity is the most widely used energy, the concept of efficiency must be applied to all other resources we use on a daily basis, such as water and gas.

A small contribution is a big help for the planet.

On a personal level, everyone can take some measures to achieve a good level of energy efficiency and thereby reduce their carbon footprint, but it should be noted that although this is a society-wide problem, reducing energy consumption in companies is the key to combating energy shortages and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, organisations adopting a certified energy management system enhances their reputation, demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability.

Panamar Bakery Group is aware of the urgency of immediately applying these business policies, and has therefore formalised its incorporation into Lean & Green, the European initiative coordinated in Spain by AECOC, for the decarbonisation of logistics, joining more than a hundred companies committed to efficiency and sustainability.

The first objective of this incorporation is to draw up a sustainable logistics plan and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its logistics processes by 20% over a maximum period of five years.

A day to reflect and make a difference

A good way to celebrate this day is to commit to energy efficiency in your establishment by following a few simple recommendations. Unfortunately, for months now, in sectors such as the hotel and catering industry, as well as bakeries, cafés and ovens, the rise in the price of electricity has caused some costs to skyrocket. This is why energy efficiency is the key to meeting the challenges of the future. Some simple changes are:

  • Replace older light bulbs with LED or energy-saving bulbs.
  • Making the most of natural light
  • Regularly clean and maintain light bulbs.
  • Good room insulation is crucial as this directly affects heating costs.
  • Reduce leakage of refrigerant gases
  • Switching to more efficient machinery
  • Encourage the use of less polluting fuels

Using energy responsibly and sustainably is good for your business and adds years to the planet. Panamar Bakery Group continues to work on the commitment of continuous improvement in order to achieve the objectives defined at the Climate Summit in Paris (COP21) contributing to the positive development of the environment and society.
